Vistaril Uses

How Does It Work?

Vistaril belongs to a group of medications known commonly as antihistamines. It works for allergic reactions (or itching reactions to opioids) by blocking histamine receptors. It probably works for anxiety by affecting certain parts of the brain. Vistaril also can cause relaxation of skeletal muscles.

Vistaril also blocks acetylcholine receptors, which is probably why it helps to alleviate nausea.

Can Children Use Vistaril?

Vistaril can be used in children, and clear dosing recommendations have been established for children (see Vistaril Dosage).

Off-Label Uses of Vistaril

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend Vistaril for something other than the uses discussed in this article. For instance, using Vistaril to treat insomnia or to treat opioid withdrawal would be considered off-label uses.
