Vistaril
® (
hydroxyzine) is a prescription medication approved to treat various conditions in adults and children. Specifically, it can be used to treat conditions such as nausea, vomiting, and itching caused by opioid medications. Although most people tolerate Vistaril well, it is not suitable for everyone. Therefore make sure to read the prescribing information on Vistaril before starting treatment with this drug.
As a type of antihistamine, Vistaril works for allergic reactions (or itching reactions to opioids) by blocking histamine receptors. It probably works for
anxiety by affecting certain parts of the brain. Vistaril also can cause relaxation of skeletal muscles and blocks acetylcholine receptors (which is probably why it helps to alleviate nausea).
The drug comes in several forms, including capsules, an oral suspension (liquid), and injections. It is typically taken two to four times a day. Some of the common side effects include drowsiness,
headaches, and dry mouth.
