Vistaril Capsules

Your healthcare provider may prescribe Vistaril® (hydroxyzine) to treat a variety of conditions, such as allergic reactions or itching reactions, nausea, or vomiting. This prescription medication comes in various forms, including capsules, an oral suspension (a liquid), or injections. The capsules are available in three strengths -- 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg capsules.

Vistaril is a type of antihistamine. It works for allergic reactions (or itching reactions to opioids) by blocking histamine receptors. It probably works for anxiety by affecting certain parts of the brain. Vistaril also can cause relaxation of skeletal muscles and blocks acetylcholine receptors (which is probably why it helps to alleviate nausea).

Even though most people tolerate the injections, oral suspension, and capsules well, Vistaril is not suitable for everyone. Before using this medication, make sure to talk to your healthcare provider about any other medical conditions you have and any other medications you are taking (including vitamins, supplements, and non-prescription medications).
