Is a Generic Version of Vistaril Available?
Vistaril® (
hydroxyzine) is a prescription medication approved for treating a variety of different conditions. It is a first-generation (sedating) antihistamine.
Brand-name Vistaril is manufactured by Pfizer, Inc. The patents for this medication have expired, and generic versions are available.
Generic Vistaril is available in the following strengths and forms:
- Hydroxyzine pamoate 25 mg capsules
- Hydroxyzine pamoate 50 mg capsules
- Hydroxyzine pamoate 100 mg capsules
- Hydroxyzine hydrochloride 25 mg per mL intramuscular injection
- Hydroxyzine hydrochloride 50 mg per mL intramuscular injection.
Vistaril oral suspension is not available in generic form. The 100 mg capsules and the intramuscular injections are available only in generic form (Pfizer is no longer making these products).

A few different manufactures make a generic for Vistaril, including (but not limited to):

- Teva Specialty Pharmaceuticals
- Watson Laboratories.
Generic Vistaril Versus Atarax
Sometimes, it can be difficult to know if a particular generic hydroxyzine product is a generic for Vistaril or for
Atarax® (a different brand-name medication). All hydroxyzine hydrochloride tablets and syrups are generic for Atarax. All generic hydroxyzine pamoate products and hydroxyzine hydrochloride injections are generic versions of Vistaril.
