An Introduction to Ultram ER Side Effects
As with any medicine,
Ultram® ER (
tramadol ER) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes the medication will have problems. In fact, some people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in many cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Ultram ER. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of Ultram ER side effects with you.)
Common Side Effects of Ultram ER
Ultram ER has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people taking Ultram ER were documented and then compared to the side effects that occurred in a similar group of people taking a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients) or taking the short-acting version of
tramadol.
Based on these studies, the most common bothersome (but not usually dangerous) side effects of Ultram ER included:
- Constipation -- in up to 29.7 percent of people
- Dizziness -- up to 28.2 percent
- Nausea -- up to 26.2 percent
- Drowsiness -- up to 20.3 percent
- Headaches -- up to 15.8 percent.
Other common side effects (occurring in 5 to 12 percent of people) included:
- Flushing of the skin
- Itching
- Vomiting
- Insomnia
- Dry mouth
- Diarrhea
- General weakness
- Increased sweating
- Loss of appetite
- Low blood pressure when standing up.
It is important to understand that some of the percentages were taken from a study that used an
Ultram ER dosage that is higher than the maximum recommended dosage (which probably increased the risk of side effects).
