Ultram ER Dosage

You will be prescribed a dosage of Ultram ER based on various factors, such as the type and dose of other painkillers you have taken, the severity of your pain, and other medications you are taking. For people who are not switching from short-acting tramadol, the recommended starting dosage is 100 mg once daily. Your healthcare provider may slowly increase your dose as necessary, until a maximum of 300 mg daily is reached.

Ultram ER Dosage: An Introduction

The dose of Ultram® ER (tramadol ER) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

  • The type and dose of other painkillers you have taken
  • The severity of your pain
  • How you respond to Ultram ER
  • Other medications you are taking
  • Other medical conditions you may have.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Ultram ER Dosing for Pain

If you are switching to Ultram ER from short-acting tramadol, your healthcare provider will calculate your Ultram ER dosage based on your current tramadol dosage. The total amount of tramadol you currently take per day will be calculated and rounded down to the nearest 100 mg strength. For instance, if you take a total of 250 mg of tramadol per 24 hours, your starting dosage of Ultram ER will be 200 mg once daily. The maximum dosage of Ultram ER is 300 mg once daily.

For people who are not switching from short-acting tramadol, the recommended starting Ultram ER dosage is 100 mg once daily. Your healthcare provider may slowly increase your dose as necessary (by 100 mg every five days), until a maximum of 300 mg daily is reached.

If you are over 65 years of age, your healthcare provider should start with a low dosage of Ultram ER and increase your dose with caution. If you are over 75 years old, Ultram ER should be used only with great caution, due to the increased risk of side effects in older individuals.

It is not recommended to take short-acting tramadol with Ultram ER.
