Tramadol/Acetaminophen Dosage

The standard recommended tramadol/acetaminophen dosage is two tablets every four to six hours as needed, not to exceed eight tablets per day. The medication is approved for the short-term treatment of pain, so you should not take it for more than five days. You can take your tramadol/acetaminophen dose with or without food, but food may slightly delay the pain-relieving effects of the drug.

The dose of tramadol/acetaminophen (Ultracet^®) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

The severity of your pain
How sensitive you are to tramadol/acetaminophen
Other medications you are taking
Other medical conditions you may have.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Tramadol/Acetaminophen Dosage for Pain

The usual recommended tramadol/acetaminophen dosage is two tablets every four to six hours as needed for pain, up to eight tablets per day (for a maximum of five days). Notice that if you take two tablets every four hours, you will exceed the maximum recommended dose. If you have kidney disease, your healthcare provider may recommend a lower dose.

Make sure to watch for any other sources of acetaminophen, including other prescription pain relievers and many over-the-counter products, such as Tylenol^®. To be safe, all other acetaminophen products should be avoided while you are taking tramadol/acetaminophen, unless you are extremely careful to limit your total acetaminophen use (from all sources added together) to 4 grams per day. The acetaminophen content of tramadol/acetaminophen is 325 mg per tablet. Taking more than 4 grams (4000 mg) of acetaminophen per day can cause liver damage, which can result in liver failure and death.
