Drug Interactions With Tapentadol ER

More Detail on Drug Interactions With Tapentadol ER

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when tapentadol ER is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Alcohol
You must not consume alcohol in any form (including in foods or medications) while taking tapentadol ER. Alcohol changes the rate at which the tablets release the medication, perhaps leading to a potentially fatal overdose.

Anticholinergic Medications
Combining tapentadol ER with anticholinergic medications increases the risk for serious problems, such as an intestinal blockage or difficulty passing urine. Check with your healthcare provider before combining such medications, even ones that are available without a prescription.

Linezolid
Taking tapentadol ER with linezolid can increase the risk of a group of symptoms called serotonin syndrome. These symptoms can include:

  • Confusion
  • Hallucinations
  • A fast heartbeat
  • Feeling faint
  • Fever
  • Sweating
  • Muscle spasms
  • Difficulty walking
  • Diarrhea.

Talk to your healthcare provider before taking these medications together. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of these symptoms, as serotonin syndrome can be quite dangerous.

Medications That Cause Drowsiness
Combining tapentadol ER with any other medication that causes drowsiness can increase your risk for side effects, such as extreme drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Serious side effects may also occur. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking tapentadol ER with such medications.

In addition, combining tapentadol ER with antidepressants (some of which may also cause drowsiness) can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome.
