Talacen Dosage

For adults and children age 12 and older, the recommended dosage of Talacen is one tablet taken by mouth every 4 hours as needed to treat mild-to-moderate pain. However, you should not take more than 6 tablets in a 24-hour period, and you should be cautious that you do not use more than 4000 mg of acetaminophen each day, as it may cause liver problems.

An Introduction to Dosing With Talacen

The dose of Talacen® (acetaminophen and pentazocine) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a few factors, including:

  • Your level of pain
  • How you respond to the medication
  • Other medications you are taking
  • Other medical conditions you may have.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

What Is the Recommended Talacen Dosage?

The usual recommended dosage for treating mild-to-moderate pain is one tablet every four hours as needed, up to a maximum of six tablets a day. This dosage is the same for adults and children who are at least 12 years of age.

Each Talacen tablet contains 650 mg of acetaminophen. This is important to know because you should not take more than 4000 mg of acetaminophen a day from all sources, as higher doses can be toxic to the liver.

Keep in mind that several products contain acetaminophen, including many prescription and non-prescription pain medicines and even many nonprescription cold and cough products. For some people, the maximum recommended daily dose of acetaminophen may be even lower -- check with your healthcare provider.

Your body may become accustomed to Talacen, especially if you take it for a long period of time, and you could develop withdrawal symptoms if it is stopped suddenly. Therefore, your healthcare provider may choose to gradually reduce your dose before stopping it completely.
