An Introduction to Sumatriptan/Naproxen Sodium Side Effects
As with any medicine,
sumatriptan/naproxen sodium (
Treximet™) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who takes
sumatriptan/
naproxen sodium will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects Seen With Sumatriptan/Naproxen Sodium
There are a number of side effects with sumatriptan/naproxen sodium that you should report to your healthcare provider. These include, but are not limited to:
- Severe chest pain or tightness
- Shortness of breath
- Sudden severe abdominal pain (stomach pain)
- Bloody diarrhea
- Changes in vision, including loss of vision
- Seizures
- Worsening of asthma
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Rapid weight gain, swelling, or water retention
- Signs of bleeding in the digestive tract, such as dark, tarry stools or vomiting of blood
- Signs of an allergic reaction, including unexplained skin rashes, itching, hives, wheezing or shortness of breath, and unexplained swelling.
Taking sumatriptan/naproxen sodium with certain
antidepressants can increase your risk of a group of dangerous symptoms called serotonin syndrome. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you have any of the following symptoms of serotonin syndrome:
- Confusion
- Seeing or hearing things that are not really there (hallucinations)
- Fast heartbeat (tachycardia)
- Fainting
- Fever
- Sweating
- Muscle spasms
- Difficulty walking
- Diarrhea.
