Subsys Storage and Disposal

If you are prescribed Subsys (fentanyl sublingual spray), it is important to know how to properly store and dispose of this drug. Subsys, in even small amounts, can cause potentially dangerous and even life-threatening complications if taken accidentally or by people who have not been prescribed the drug. To help minimize problems, keep Subsys stored in a safe place and follow the disposal instructions carefully.

In Introduction to Subsys Storage and Disposal

Subsys® (fentanyl sublingual spray) contains fentanyl, a strong opioid narcotic. Even the small amount of fentanyl left over after a dose of Subsys is enough to cause serious problems, including possible death, if accidentally taken by a child or someone for whom the medication was not prescribed.

In addition, this medication may be sought out by people who abuse substances. If you take Subsys, it is very important that you store it and dispose of it in a safe manner to help prevent possible theft or accidental ingestion.

How Should I Store Subsys?

Subsys comes in individually sealed, child-resistant blister packages, with one spray per package. Store the unopened packages in a secure, safe place, away from children and people for whom the medication was not prescribed.

Keep Subsys spray in the sealed blister package until immediately before use. Do not remove it from the blister packaging for storage in a pillbox, medi-set, or any other container. Each box of Subsys comes with a supply of disposal bags. After each dose of Subsys, dispose of the used container in one disposal bag, seal the bag, the throw it away in the trash (out of the reach of children and pets).
