Can You Shoot Up Suboxone?
If you inject Suboxone (buprenorphine and naloxone), it can be quite dangerous -- and even fatal. Before you shoot up with Suboxone, it is important to know that this medication contains naloxone, a drug that counteracts the effects of the opioid component of this drug when used via injection. As a result, taking Suboxone in this way can lead to rapid and severe withdrawal symptoms.
Suboxone® (buprenorphine and naloxone) is a prescription medication used to treat opioid dependence. It comes as tablets or films that are dissolved under the tongue. People often prefer to misuse opioids by injection; however, injecting Suboxone is not a good idea.
Of course, we will first state that you should never misuse opioids by injection, especially those designed for oral use to be taken by mouth or dissolved under the tongue. Injecting the fillers and inactive ingredients can be dangerous. In addition, injecting opioids can rapidly lead to high levels of the drug in the body, which can be dangerous and even lethal.
With that aside, there are more "down-to-earth" reasons why you should not shoot up Suboxone. Most significantly, Suboxone is specifically formulated in a manner to help prevent misuse by injection. It contains naloxone, a drug that counteracts the effects of opioids, including buprenorphine (the opioid in Suboxone). Naloxone is not very active when taken by mouth or under the tongue.
However, it does become active when injected. This means that injecting Suboxone is likely to cause withdrawal symptoms, especially in people who are also taking other opioids, such as morphine, oxycodone, or heroin. This type of withdrawal is often extremely rapid and quite severe.
But Other People Do It!
Yes, some people do inject Suboxone. Most likely, these people are not taking any other opioids. Still, it is hard to imagine that this would create a greater "high" compared to taking the drug as directed, due to the effects of the injected naloxone.
Nonetheless, different people react to medications in different ways. Some people even claim to inject the drug simply because they do not like the taste of the tablets or film. This seems extreme and dangerous, to say the least.
