Sprix Warnings and Precautions

Although it is considered an effective pain reliever for many people, Sprix can cause problems. For example, using Sprix increases the risk of developing serious and potentially life-threatening problems, such as bleeding, heart attacks, and strokes. The drug's warnings and precautions also state that you may not be able to safely use Sprix if you have kidney problems or an upcoming surgery.

What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to using Sprix™ (ketorolac nasal spray) if you have:
  • Asthma
  • Congestive heart failure or other heart or circulatory problems
  • High blood pressure (hypertension) or are taking medication to treat high blood pressure
  • Liver disease, such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or liver failure
  • Kidney disease or kidney failure
  • Dehydration, which occurs when you lose a large amount of fluids, such as when you experience vomiting or diarrhea
  • Bleeding problems, or are taking medicine that decreases your blood's ability to clot
  • Inflammatory bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, or a history of these conditions
  • Stomach ulcers, stomach bleeding, or a history of these conditions
  • An allergy to aspirin, other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)
  • Plans for surgery
  • A pattern of frequent alcohol use or currently smoke
  • Any allergies, including allergies to foods, dyes, or preservatives.
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are:
  • Pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
  • Breastfeeding.
Make sure to tell your healthcare provider about any other medications you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription medicines, any other NSAIDs, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
