Savella Side Effects

Urinary or Sexual Side Effects With Savella in Men

The prescribing information for Savella lists several urinary or sexual side effects, which were reported in at least 2 percent of men taking the medication for fibromyalgia (and which occurred more frequently with Savella compared to a placebo). The exact percentages of these side effects were not reported. Such Savella side effects include:
 
  • Painful urination, difficulty passing urine or emptying the bladder, or decreased urine flow
  • Ejaculation problems
  • Erectile dysfunction (also known as ED or impotence)
  • Decreased sex drive
  • Infection or inflammation of the prostate (prostatitis)
  • Scrotal pain or testicular pain
  • Testicular swelling.
     
    Serious Savella Side Effects
    Some side effects with Savella are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. Although generally rare, some of these side effects may be more common. These include but are not limited to:
     
    • A rapid heart rate
    • Chest pain or heart palpitations
    • Seizures
    • High blood pressure (hypertension)
    • Anxiety, agitation, or panic attacks
    • Hostility or aggressiveness
    • Engaging in unusual or dangerous activities
    • Restlessness or inability to sit still
    • Extreme elation or feelings of happiness that may switch back and forth with a depressed or sad mood
    • Other unusual changes in behavior
    • Shortness of breath
    • Suicidal thoughts or behavior
    • Signs of liver problems, such as:
     
      • Yellow eyes or skin (jaundice)
      • Dark urine
      • Increased liver enzymes (found using a blood test)
     
    • Signs of serotonin syndrome (a rare but dangerous problem associated with medications like Savella) such as:
     
      • Confusion or other mental changes
      • A rapid heart rate
      • Nausea
      • Vomiting
      • Diarrhea
      • Hallucinations
      • Blood pressure changes
      • Overactive reflexes
      • Fever
      • Shivering
      • Shakiness
      • Agitation
      • Sweating
      • Seizures
      • Coma
     
    • Signs of low sodium levels in the blood (hyponatremia), such as:
     
      • Headaches
      • Difficulty concentrating, memory problems, or confusion
      • Unsteadiness or falling
      • Hallucinations
      • Fainting
      • Seizures
      • Coma
     
    • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
     
      • An unexplained rash
      • Itching
      • Hives
      • Swelling of the mouth or throat
      • Wheezing
      • Difficulty breathing.
