Drug Interactions With Propoxyphene

Medications That Cause Drowsiness
Combining propoxyphene with any other medications that cause drowsiness can increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Other serious side effects, such as dangerously low blood pressure, may also occur. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking propoxyphene with such medications.

Additionally, combining propoxyphene with antidepressants may increase the risk of a group of symptoms called serotonin syndrome. These symptoms include confusion, hallucinations, a fast heartbeat, feeling faint, fever, sweating, muscle spasms, difficulty walking, and diarrhea. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking propoxyphene with an antidepressant. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of these symptoms, as serotonin syndrome can be very dangerous.

Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
As mentioned previously, combining propoxyphene with antidepressants (including MAOIs) can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Due to the high risk of this problem, propoxyphene should not be combined with an MAOI and you should not take propoxyphene and an MAOI within 14 days of each other.

Warfarin
There have been reports of a possible interaction between propoxyphene and warfarin. This interaction might increase your risk of bleeding. Check with your healthcare provider before combining these medications; you may need to be monitored more closely.

Final Thoughts

It is possible that not all propoxyphene drug interactions were discussed in this article. Therefore, you should talk with your pharmacist or healthcare provider about any specific interactions that may apply to you.
