What Is Pentazocine Used For?

Is It Safe for Older Adults to Use Pentazocine?

Older adults can use pentazocine. However, they may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug, and may be more likely to experience confusion and excessive sedation after using it.

Some experts recommend that the drug not be used at all in older individuals due to the risk for confusion, hallucinations, and other central nervous system side effects. Instead, other medications may be preferred. If pentazocine is given to an older adult, it should generally be started at a low dose.

What About Off-Label Pentacozine Uses?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this medicine for something other than the conditions discussed in this article. This is known as an "off-label" use. Using pentazocine for pain relief after surgery in children younger than age 16 is an example of an off-label use.
