Side Effects of Pegloticase

Common Side Effects

Pegloticase has been studied extensively in clinical trials. In these studies, the side effects that occurred in a group of people who received pegloticase were documented and then compared to the side effects that occurred in a similar group of people who were given a placebo (a "sugar pill" that does not contain any active ingredients).
In these studies, some of the most common pegloticase side effects included:
  • Gout flare-ups (a temporary worsening of gout) -- in up to 77 percent of people
  • Infusion reactions (such as hives, itching, shortness of breath, and chest pain) -- up to 26 percent
  • Nausea -- up to 12 percent
  • Bruising -- up to 11 percent
  • Common cold symptoms (such as a sore throat or runny nose) -- up to 7 percent
  • Constipation -- up to 6 percent
  • Chest pain -- up to 6 percent
  • Vomiting -- up to 5 percent.

Final Thoughts

You may experience some or none of the pegloticase side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, there is no way for your healthcare provider to know beforehand if you will have problems with a medicine that you have never tried.
Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while receiving pegloticase or if something "just does not seem right." While it may not be related to the medication, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
