Pegloticase

Available by prescription only, pegloticase is approved for treating gout. Specifically, this medication is used to prevent gout attacks from occurring and works by lowering uric acid levels in the body. It is administered intravenously (through an IV) by a healthcare provider once every two weeks. Side effects may include nausea, bruising, and shortness of breath.

What Is Pegloticase?

Pegloticase (Krystexxa®) is a prescription medication approved for the treatment of gout. It is given intravenously (by IV) once every two weeks.

Are There Side Effects?

Just like any medicine, pegloticase can cause side effects.
 However, not everyone who uses the drug will experience problems. Most people tolerate it quite well.
 
Common side effects of pegloticase include but are not limited to:
 
  • Gout flares (temporary worsening of gout)
  • Infusion reactions (such as hives, itching, shortness of breath, or chest pain)
  • Nausea
  • Bruising.
     
If reactions do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider. Serious side effects are less common.
