Subsys Medication Information

Before taking Subsys® (fentanyl sublingual spray), it's important to seek out all the information you can on the benefits and risks of the medication. For example, Subsys is a strong narcotic opioid with a high potential for abuse. This drug may not be suitable for people with a history of substance abuse, head injuries, or certain other medical problems.
 
Subsys is approved for use in adults only. It is used to treat breakthrough pain in people with cancer who are already used to the effects of opioids. Nausea, constipation, and drowsiness are some of the most commonly reported side effects of this drug.
 
This medicine comes as a liquid that is sprayed under the tongue. It is usually taken no more often than every four hours as needed for breakthrough pain. Do not take more than two doses of Subsys (30 minutes apart) for each breakthrough pain episode. Also, do not take it more than four times in a day.
