Demerol Drug Information

Demerol® (meperidine hydrochloride) is a prescription medicine approved to relieve moderate to severe pain. It was a very popular pain reliever for decades but has fallen out of favor in recent years.

Demerol is rather short-acting but is transformed in the body into a toxic metabolite that lasts much longer in the body. If repeated doses of this medication are needed, the toxic metabolite (normeperidine) builds up and can cause serious side effects. Because of the serious problems that may occur, healthcare providers will only recommend the drug in very special situations.

As with any narcotic, Demerol has a significant potential for both psychological and physical dependence and abuse. In fact, it is classified as a controlled substance, meaning there are special rules and regulations for prescribing and obtaining it. The medication is not a good choice for people who have a history of alcohol or drug abuse.
