OxyContin Addiction Symptoms

OxyContin® (oxycodone ER) is a prescription pain medication. It is a potent narcotic and an opioid (morphine-like) medication. OxyContin is a very effective pain medication, but it also has significant abuse potential.

Friends and family can keep an eye out for symptoms of OxyContin addiction, such as:

  • Secluded behavior, often needing to spend large amounts of time alone
  • An unexplainable lack of money
  • Unexplained changes in mood or behaviors.

Healthcare providers who prescribe or dispense OxyContin also watch for certain signs of addiction, such as:

  • Going through an OxyContin prescription too quickly.

  • "Doctor shopping," which is seeing several different healthcare providers to obtain numerous OxyContin prescriptions or switching from one provider to another.

  • Repeated reports of losing a prescription, having a prescription stolen, or needing a prescription early to go on vacation.
