Abuse Potential With Oramorph

Oramorph SR contains morphine, a popular drug of abuse (see Oramorph Abuse). It is a good idea to keep this medication in a safe place, where it is unlikely to be stolen by others. Never let someone else take your medication. This medication provides a high dose of morphine that could easily result in death in someone who is not used to it. Also, it is dangerous to inject this medication, as it contains inactive ingredients that can be quite harmful when injected into the bloodstream. People who abuse Oramorph SR and suddenly stop using it are likely to experience withdrawal symptoms (see Oramorph Withdrawal).

When and How to Take Oramorph

Some general considerations for those taking Oramorph SR include the following:
  • The medication comes in the form of an extended-release tablet. It is taken by mouth, usually every 8 or 12 hours, around-the-clock. It is not meant to be taken "as needed" (at unscheduled times only when needed for pain).
  • You can take the medication with food or on an empty stomach. If Oramorph SR bothers your stomach, try taking it with food.
  • Never crush, chew, or dissolve the tablets, as this would release a dangerous amount of morphine. Never take a tablet that appears to be damaged in any way.
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be taken as prescribed. Do not increase your dose without your healthcare provider's approval. Also, do not suddenly stop taking Oramorph SR, especially if you have taken it regularly for more than a few days (see Oramorph Withdrawal).
