Oramorph Overdose

The effects of an Oramorph SR (morphine sulfate ER) overdose can be potentially serious. If you take too much, overdose symptoms may include limp muscles, a slow heart rate, and cold, clammy skin. In some cases, an Oramorph SR overdose can even lead to death. Treatment options for this type of overdose include pumping the stomach, administering an antidote, and providing supportive care.

Can You Overdose With Oramorph?

It is possible to overdose on Oramorph® SR (morphine sulfate ER), a prescription pain medicine. As a matter of fact, an overdose can be quite dangerous and perhaps even lethal. The specific effects of this type of overdose can vary, depending on a number of factors, including the Oramorph SR dosage and whether it was taken with any other medications (legal or illegal) or substances.
If you suspect that you may have taken too much Oramorph SR, seek immediate medical attention.

Symptoms of an Oramorph SR Overdose

An Oramorph SR overdose may cause the following symptoms:
  • Extreme drowsiness
  • Limp muscles
  • Cold, clammy skin
  • A slow heart rate (bradycardia)
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension)
  • Difficulty breathing (slow and shallow breathing)
  • Small pupils
  • Fluid in the lungs
  • Death.
Chewing, crushing, dissolving, snorting, or injecting Oramorph SR can easily result in an overdose. Oramorph SR tablets are designed to release morphine slowly over time. Disrupting the tablets can cause an overdose by releasing too much morphine too quickly.

Treatment for an Oramorph Overdose

If the overdose was recent, a healthcare provider may induce vomiting, "pump" the stomach, or administer activated charcoal to prevent the body from absorbing any more Oramorph SR. An antidote (naloxone or Narcan®) may also be administered to counteract the overdose effects of Oramorph SR.
Treatment will also involve supportive care, which consists of treating the symptoms that occur as a result of the overdose. It is important that you seek medical attention immediately if you believe that you may have overdosed on Oramorph SR.
