Oramorph and Constipation

For people taking Oramorph SR (morphine sulfate ER), constipation is a likely side effect. In fact, most people who use this pain medication will experience some degree of constipation. Your healthcare provider may recommend that you take a laxative while taking Oramorph SR, as the body never adjusts to the effects of the drug that cause this side effect.

Does Oramorph SR Cause Constipation?

Oramorph® SR (morphine sulfate ER) is a prescription pain medication that contains morphine. Narcotics, including Oramorph SR, are likely to cause constipation. Almost everyone who takes Oramorph SR will develop some degree of constipation, unless preventative measures are taken.

Constipation With Oramorph SR: Treatment and Prevention

The standard non-drug treatments for constipation, such as exercise and increased fiber and water intake, are usually ineffective for constipation caused by narcotics. Most people find that a laxative is usually necessary to prevent and treat constipation due to Oramorph SR. Although stool softeners, such as docusate (Colace® and others), may help a little, stimulant laxatives are often necessary. Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist to recommend a laxative that is best for your situation (don't forget to mention that you are taking Oramorph SR). In many cases, a combination stool softener plus stimulant laxative product may be a good choice.
Laxatives are useful for both preventing and treating constipation due to Oramorph SR.

Will It Go Away?

Some narcotic side effects (such as drowsiness or nausea) tend to go away as your body adjusts to the medication (see Oramorph Side Effects). However, constipation due to narcotics will not go away or improve, even with long-term use of the medication. The body never adjusts or adapts to the effects of Oramorph SR that cause constipation. Someone who has been using Oramorph SR for years is just as likely to have constipation due to the drug as someone who just started taking it.
