Ofirmev and Pregnancy

Although no studies have been done on receiving Ofirmev (intravenous acetaminophen) during pregnancy, the oral forms of acetaminophen have been extensively studied in clinical trials. In these studies, oral forms of acetaminophen were shown to be safe for use in pregnant women. Although it is probably reasonable to assume that Ofirmev would also be safe, potential problems cannot be ruled out.

Can Pregnant Women Receive Ofirmev?

Ofirmev™ (intravenous acetaminophen) is a prescription pain and fever medication. It is an intravenous (IV) version of acetaminophen. Although Ofirmev is officially listed as a pregnancy Category C medication (meaning that it might not be safe for use during pregnancy), acetaminophen has long been considered a safe choice for pain relief and fever reduction during pregnancy.

What Is Pregnancy Category C?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a pregnancy category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus when a specific medicine is taken during pregnancy. Pregnancy Category C is given to medicines that have not been studied in pregnant humans, but do appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies.

In addition, medicines that have not been studied in any pregnant women or animals are automatically given a pregnancy Category C rating.

Ofirmev is officially listed as a pregnancy Category C medication because it has never been studied in any pregnant women or animals. However, oral forms of acetaminophen have been studied extensively in pregnant animals and women and are generally considered the safest medication for pain relief in most pregnant women. There is no reason to assume that IV acetaminophen would cause problems, although such problems cannot be ruled out until actual studied are performed.

It should be noted that overdoses of acetaminophen could be dangerous to a developing fetus.
