Ofirmev and Breastfeeding

Although Ofirmev (intravenous acetaminophen) does pass through breast milk in small amounts, it is generally considered safe to use while nursing. Research has shown that when women took oral acetaminophen while breastfeeding, it did not appear to cause problems in the infant. However, no specific research has been done on breastfeeding and Ofirmev, so talk to your healthcare provider before receiving this drug.

Is Ofirmev Safe While Breastfeeding?

Ofirmev™ (intravenous acetaminophen) passes through breast milk in humans. However, acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Ofirmev) is usually considered quite safe for use while breastfeeding. Nonetheless, if you are nursing, talk with your healthcare provider before receiving Ofirmev.

Research on Breastfeeding and Ofirmev

Research has demonstrated that acetaminophen (when taken by mouth) passes through breast milk in relatively low amounts. This low amount appears to be safe for infants. There have been no reports of problems (except one case of a rash) in breastfed infants whose mothers took oral acetaminophen. The American Academy of Pediatrics considers acetaminophen to be compatible with breastfeeding.
There is no reason to believe that IV acetaminophen (Ofirmev) should be any different than oral acetaminophen, at least in terms of safety during breastfeeding. However, because Ofirmev has not been studied in women who were nursing, the possibility of problems cannot be entirely eliminated.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should discuss breastfeeding and Ofirmev with your healthcare provider. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
