Generic Ofirmev

Because Ofirmev (intravenous acetaminophen) is protected by a patent, no generic version of this medication is available at this time. The first patent is set to expire in 2017, which is the earliest predictable date that a generic Ofirmev product may be manufactured. It's important to note that intravenous acetaminophen is the "generic name" for this product; it's not a "generic version."

Can I Buy Generic Ofirmev?

Ofirmev™ (intravenous acetaminophen) is a prescription medication approved for the treatment of pain and fever. It is the first and only intravenous (IV) acetaminophen product approved for use in the United States. It can be used by itself or along with stronger pain medications.
Ofirmev is made by Cadence Pharmaceuticals, Inc. It is currently under the protection of a patent that prevents any generic Ofirmev from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

The first patent for Ofirmev is currently set to expire in August 2017. This is the earliest possible date that a generic version of Ofirmev could become available.
However, circumstances could extend this exclusivity period beyond 2017. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for specific Ofirmev uses. Once the patent expires, several companies will likely begin manufacturing generic Ofirmev.

Is Acetaminophen a Generic Ofirmev?

No -- acetaminophen is the active ingredient in Ofirmev (as well as many other medications), but it is not a generic version of the drug. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."
The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version, the original medicine must have gone off-patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
