Is Naprosyn a Narcotic?

Although Naprosyn® (naproxen) is a medication used to treat pain and other symptoms, this drug is not a type of narcotic. Naprosyn belongs to a group of medications called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and works by blocking the action of certain hormones (prostaglandins) that cause inflammation and pain in the body.
Specifically, this medicine is useful for:
  • Reducing pain related to bone, muscle, or tendon injury or inflammation
  • Lowering fever
  • Alleviating pain and joint swelling associated with different forms of arthritis and other conditions.
Naprosyn comes in the form of a tablet or liquid, and is typically taken no more than twice daily. It is important to take the lowest effective dose for the least amount of time in order to treat your condition. This will decrease the chances of developing serious side effects.
