Motrin Safety

Motrin® (ibuprofen) is a medication licensed for relieving pain, inflammation, and fever. Although it is generally a safe medication, Motrin does pose certain risks.
Motrin belongs to a class of drugs known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It's important to note that certain problems can develop in people taking these products. For example, Motrin has been reported to cause potentially serious (and even life-threatening) problems in the stomach and intestines, including bleeding, stomach ulcers, and holes in the stomach or intestines. Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience any signs or symptoms of stomach ulcers or bleeding, including:
  • Abdominal pain (or stomach pain)
  • Black, tarry stools
  • Vomiting blood.
Other safety concerns relate to side effects such as heartburn, dizziness, and nausea. Motrin is not safe for anyone who has a stomach ulcer or is in the third trimester of pregnancy.
