How Does Motrin Work?

Motrin® (ibuprofen) is a medication used to treat mild to moderate pain, inflammation, fever, and stiffness. It belongs to a class of drugs called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). But how does Motrin work?

Motrin works by inhibiting the action of certain hormones, called prostaglandins, that cause inflammation and pain in the body. By blocking these hormones, Motrin may help:

  • Reduce pain related to bone, muscle, or tendon injury or inflammation
  • Lower fever
  • Alleviate pain and joint swelling associated with different forms of arthritis and other conditions.

It is important to take the lowest effective dose for the least amount of time in order to treat your condition. This will decrease the chances of developing serious side effects.
