Dosage of Motrin

For acute pain relief, most people over 12 years of age are recommended to start with a 200 mg dosage of Motrin every four to six hours as needed. Dosing can be increased if you are experiencing mild to moderate pain or treating painful menstruation, but the daily non-prescription dosage should not exceed 1200 mg. The recommended starting dosage of Motrin for most people with rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis is 1200 mg to 3200 mg daily, split up into several smaller doses throughout the day.

Dosage of Motrin: An Introduction

The dose of Motrin® (ibuprofen) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:

  • The specific Motrin product
  • The medical condition you are being treated for
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may be currently taking.

As is always the case, do not adjust your Motrin dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so. Also, you should not take over-the-counter Motrin for pain relief for more than 10 days or fever for more than 3 days without talking to your healthcare provider.

Acute Pain, Including Painful Menstrual Periods or Fever
The recommended non-prescription dose for most people over 12 years of age is Motrin 200 mg by mouth every four to six hours as needed to reduce pain or fever. If one tablet or caplet does not work, then two may be used. However, the daily non-prescription dose of Motrin should not exceed 1200 mg (six tablets or caplets), unless directed by your doctor.

For children or infants under the age of 12, follow the directions on the label or call your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

For pain relief, do not self-medicate for more than 10 days without talking with your doctor. For fever relief, you should contact your doctor after two to three days if symptoms have not improved or immediately if the fever is accompanied by a sore throat.

The recommended starting prescription dose for most people with mild to moderate pain or painful menstruation is Motrin 400 mg by mouth every four to six hours as needed to control pain. You should not take this amount of Motrin unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
