Subutex (sublingual buprenorphine) is available in both brand-name and generic form. Generic Subutex comes in the same strengths as the brand-name drug. All of the generic versions currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to the brand-name medication. Teva Pharmaceuticals, Roxane Laboratories, and Midlothian Laboratories are some of the manufacturers of the generic medication.

Can I Buy Generic Subutex?

Subutex® (sublingual buprenorphine) is a prescription medication approved to treat opioid dependence. Subutex is a Schedule III controlled substance because it has potential for abuse. There are strict laws and regulations controlling its sale and use.

Brand-name Subutex is manufactured by Reckitt Benckiser Pharmaceuticals, Inc. However, it has since come off-patent and is available as a generic product.

Available Strengths

Generic Subutex tablets are available in the same two strengths as the brand-name version: 2 mg and 8 mg. This medication is made by a few different manufacturers, including:

  • Teva Pharmaceuticals USA
  • Roxane Laboratories, Inc.
  • Midlothian Laboratories.

Is Generic Buprenorphine as Good as Subutex?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one. An "AB" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication.

All of the generic Subutex versions currently available have an "AB" rating, meaning they should be equivalent to Subutex.
