Pain Home > Motrin Side Effects
It is possible to experience certain side effects while taking Motrin. Side effects that were documented in more than 1 percent of people include diarrhea, dizziness, and indigestion. Potentially serious side effects include slurred speech and bloody urine or stools. If you experience such problems as these, be sure to seek medical attention immediately, as this may indicate a life-threatening problem.
As with any medicine, side effects are possible with Motrin® (ibuprofen). However, not everyone who takes the drug will experience problems. In fact, most people tolerate it well. If side effects do occur, they are generally minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.
Several factors seem to affect the chances of developing side effects with Motrin, including:
- The Motrin dosage
- Other medical conditions
- Other medicines being taken at the same time.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Motrin. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list of Motrin side effects with you.)
Motrin has been studied extensively in clinical trials, with thousands of people worldwide having been evaluated. In these studies, side effects are always documented and compared to those that occur in a similar group of people not taking the medicine. This way, it is possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they occurred, and how they compared to the group not taking the medicine.
Based on these studies, the most common side effects of Motrin include:
- Stomach pain
- Unexplained rash.
Other side effects (occurring in more than 1 percent of people) include but are not limited to:
- Stomach cramps
- Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
- Decreased appetite
