Pain Home > Generic Duragesic

Several companies manufacture a generic Duragesic (fentanyl patch) product, including Actavis U.S., Mylan Pharmaceuticals, and Sandoz Laboratories, Inc. The United States Food and Drug Administration has determined that the generic versions of Duragesic are equivalent to the brand-name drug. However, there appear to be some differences in these generics, as far as how well the patches stick to the skin and problems with accidental leaking.

Can I Buy Generic Duragesic?

Duragesic® (fentanyl patch) is a long-acting prescription pain medication approved to treat moderate-to-severe, persistent, and chronic pain. It is used to treat pain that has not been adequately controlled with other pain medications.

Duragesic is a Schedule II controlled substance because it has the potential for abuse. There are strict laws and regulations controlling its sale and use.

Duragesic is manufactured by ALZA corporation for PriCara®, which is a division of Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc. It is now off-patent and available as a generic.

Who Makes Generic Duragesic?

  • Actavis U.S.

  • Sandoz Laboratories, Inc.

Some healthcare providers and some fentanyl patch users have developed preferences for particular generic brands of the patches. There appear to be some differences among the generics, in terms of how well the patches stick and how likely they are to have problems with accidental leaking, among other problems. If you have a preference for a particular generic, make sure to let your pharmacist know.
