Alternatives to a Laparoscopy for Endometriosis

Other Types of Surgeries

Besides a laparoscopic surgery for endometriosis, another type of surgery your healthcare provider may advise is a hysterectomy. This surgery can be done in several ways. The important thing to know about a hysterectomy is that it takes out your uterus. This means you will not have a period and will not be able to have children after the surgery. Having a hysterectomy usually cures endometriosis, especially if your ovaries and fallopian tubes are taken out at the same time. Again, this surgery is only best for women who do not want to have children in the future.

Endometriosis can also be removed with an open abdominal surgery. This means you will have a larger cut in your abdomen (stomach). Having open surgery usually means more pain and a longer time to heal compared to a laparoscopy.

You may want to talk with your healthcare provider about what option is best for you.
