Ketamine for Chronic Pain

Ketamine hydrochloride (Ketalar®) is a prescription drug approved for use as an anesthetic for certain medical procedures. However, a healthcare provider may also recommend this drug for "off-label," or unapproved, uses.

Some examples of off-label uses for ketamine include treating pain, such as postoperative pain, cancer pain, or chronic pain. Ketamine may help treat these types of pain by affecting certain brain pathways, which can quickly produce a loss of sensation and awareness, along with pain relief.
