Ketamine and Depression

Although ketamine hydrochloride (Ketalar®) is approved for use as an anesthetic for certain medical procedures, there are also "off-label" uses for this drug. An off-label use is when a healthcare provider recommends a medication for something it is not approved to treat.

For example, using ketamine for depression treatment is an example of an off-label use. Specifically, ketamine may be beneficial in the treatment of major depression that has not been adequately controlled using other treatments.
