Infant Acetaminophen

Infant Acetaminophen Strengths

To help minimize the risk of overdoses due to mix-ups between infant acetaminophen and children's acetaminophen products, the strength of all infant acetaminophen products will now be the same as the children's acetaminophen products (160 mg per 5 mL). This is a change from the previous concentration of infant acetaminophen (which was 80 mg per 0.8 mL). The new products will be less concentrated, meaning you will have to give more (in terms of volume) to achieve the same dosage.

For a while, both concentrations may be available in the marketplace, probably well into 2012. This means that caregivers need to be extremely vigilant to note the concentration (and dosage) of the particular product they have. If you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to ask your pharmacist or healthcare provider, as quite a bit of confusion and many questions are anticipated during this change.

Is There a Generic Version of Infant Acetaminophen?

Currently, there are many different versions of generic infant acetaminophen available (see Generic Tylenol).
