Indocin Dosage

If you are treating symptoms of arthritis with Indocin, dosage recommendations typically start at 25 mg two or three times daily. Depending on your reaction to the medication, your healthcare provider may increase your Indocin dose to a maximum of 200 mg per day. For people with gout symptoms, Indocin dosing guidelines generally call for a dose of 50 mg three times a day until the pain is tolerable. People with tendonitis or bursitis in the shoulder generally start with an Indocin dosage of 25 mg three or four times daily.

Indocin Dosage: An Introduction

The dose of Indocin® (indomethacin) that your healthcare provider prescribes will vary depending on a number of factors, including:

  • The medical condition for which you are being treated
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may be taking.

As is always the case, do not adjust your Indocin dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Ankylosing Spondylitis
For osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, or rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, the recommended starting Indocin dose is usually 25 mg two or three times a day. After several weeks, if you are still having symptoms, your healthcare provider may increase your dose; if side effects occur, your doctor may decrease your Indocin dose. The maximum recommended daily dosage of Indocin is 150 mg to 200 mg per day.

Indocin may take several weeks before it begins to work to its full potential.

Acute Painful Shoulder
For people with tendonitis or bursitis in the shoulder, the typical recommended Indocin dosage is 25 mg three or four times daily. If symptoms continue, your healthcare provider may increase your dose to Indocin 50 mg three times a day. The maximum recommended dose is 150 mg per day. For an acute painful shoulder, the usual course of treatment is 7 to 14 days.
