Indocin and Pregnancy

There are a number of situations in which a person should not take Indocin, and pregnancy is usually one of them. Most doctors do not recommend Indocin for pregnant women at any point in the pregnancy. Even if a doctor believes the benefits of Indocin outweigh the risk to the unborn child early in the pregnancy, a woman in the third trimester should not take Indocin.

Indocin and Pregnancy: An Overview

Most healthcare providers do not recommend taking Indocin® (indomethacin) during pregnancy because it can possibly cause problems to the unborn child or complicate labor and delivery. Women should not take Indocin at all during the third trimester. Early in the pregnancy, however, it is possible that your healthcare provider may recommend Indocin if he or she feels that the benefits to you outweigh the risks to your unborn child.

Indocin and Pregnancy Category C

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) uses a pregnancy category system to classify the possible risks to a fetus that may occur when women take specific medications during pregnancy. The FDA considers Indocin to be a pregnancy Category C medicine. Pregnancy Category C refers to medicines that have not been studied in pregnant humans but do appear to cause harm to the fetus in animal studies. Also, medicines that have not been studied in any pregnant women or animals automatically are given a pregnancy Category C rating.
Even if a drug has resulted in adverse effects in animal fetuses, it's important to remember that animals do not always respond to medicines the same way that humans do. Therefore, a healthcare provider may still prescribe a pregnancy Category C medicine to a pregnant woman if he or she believes that the benefits to the woman outweigh the possible risks to the unborn child.
If you become pregnant (or are thinking of becoming pregnant) while taking Indocin, let your healthcare provider know. He or she will consider both the benefits and risks of Indocin during pregnancy before making a recommendation for your particular situation.
