Hydrocodone/APAP Side Effects

Nausea and vomiting are among the most commonly reported hydrocodone/APAP side effects -- they do not mean you are allergic to the drug. Other common side effects include drowsiness and constipation. Some side effects of hydrocodone/APAP are potentially serious and require prompt medical attention, such as irregular breathing, jaundice, and slow heart rate.

 

Hydrocodone/APAP Side Effects: An Overview

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with hydrocodone/APAP (hydrocodone and acetaminophen). However, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are easily treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects of Hydrocodone/APAP

Some side effects with hydrocodone/APAP, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include, but are not limited to:
 
  • Signs of liver damage, such as:
     
    • Yellowing of the whites of the eyes or skin (jaundice)
    • Upper-right abdominal pain (stomach pain)
    • Dark urine
 
  • The urge to take more hydrocodone/APAP than prescribed or for a non-medical purpose (see Hydrocodone/APAP Abuse)
  • Confusion
  • Anxiety or fear
  • Severe constipation
  • Slow or irregular breathing
  • A slow heart rate (bradycardia)
  • Difficulty passing urine
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension)
  • Severe drowsiness
  • Signs of an allergic reaction, such as:
     
    • An unexplained rash
    • Hives
    • Itching
    • Swelling of the mouth or throat
    • Wheezing
    • Difficulty breathing.
