Hydrocodone/APAP Drug Interactions

Barbiturates
Taking a barbiturate with hydrocodone/APAP can increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Serious side effects may also occur. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking hydrocodone/APAP with a barbiturate.

Benzodiazepines
Combining hydrocodone/APAP with a benzodiazepine might increase your risk of side effects, such as drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Serious side effects may also occur. Talk to your healthcare provider before taking hydrocodone/APAP with any benzodiazepines.

Other Acetaminophen Products
When taking hydrocodone/APAP, you should limit your total daily dose of acetaminophen (from all sources combined) to no more than 4 grams (4000 mg) per day. To calculate how much acetaminophen your hydrocodone/APAP product contains, use the larger number in the hydrocodone/APAP strength. For instance, hydrocodone/APAP 5/500 mg tablets contain 500 mg of acetaminophen per tablet.

Watch for any other sources of acetaminophen, including other prescription pain relievers and many over-the-counter products, such as Tylenol. To be safe, all other acetaminophen products should be avoided while you are taking hydrocodone/APAP, unless you are extremely careful to limit your total acetaminophen use (from all sources added together) to 4 grams per day.

Other Narcotics or Opiates
Use extreme caution when combining hydrocodone/APAP with other narcotics or opiates, as serious side effects could occur. You should only use these medications together with your healthcare provider's approval and supervision.

Sleep Medications
Hydrocodone/APAP can cause significant drowsiness, and combining it with a sleep medication could lead to dangerous effects. In general, hydrocodone/APAP should not be used in combination with sleep medications, unless your healthcare provider specifically recommends that you do so.
