Flector and Breastfeeding

The full risks of breastfeeding while using Flector (diclofenac patch) are unknown at this time. No research has been done to see if the active ingredient in the medication passes through breast milk. Since the medicine is cleared from the body quickly, however, it is not expected that Flector would cause serious problems. Before using Flector, nursing women should first consult their healthcare providers.

Can I Use Flector While Breastfeeding?

It is not known if the Flector® Patch (diclofenac patch) is safe for use during breastfeeding. The manufacturer of Flector suggests that nursing women avoid taking this medication. Therefore, if you are breastfeeding, you should talk with your healthcare provider about using Flector.

Breastfeeding While on Flector: Safety Concerns

The active ingredient in Flector (diclofenac) passes through breast milk in animals after it is taken by mouth. No research has been done to see if diclofenac passes through breast milk in humans.

However, due to the low overall exposure of the body to diclofenac with Flector (since only a fraction of the medication is absorbed throughout the body), and because the medication is cleared from the body quickly, it is not expected that Flector would cause serious problems. Nonetheless, the possibility of serious problems cannot be ruled out.

Talking With Your Healthcare Provider

You should talk with your healthcare provider about breastfeeding while taking Flector. Each woman's situation is different, and you and your healthcare provider understand your situation best. After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, you and your healthcare provider can make a shared decision about Flector and breastfeeding that is right for you.
