Getting Enough Sleep
Getting enough sleep and the right kind of sleep can help ease the pain and fatigue of
fibromyalgia. Some tips that may help those with fibromyalgia improve the quality and quantity of their sleep include:
- Keeping regular sleep habits
- Avoiding caffeine and alcohol in the late afternoon and evening
- Avoiding daytime naps
- Keeping your bedroom dark, quiet, and cool.
Your healthcare provider may also prescribe a medication to help with sleep.
Eating Well
Although some people report feeling better when they eat or avoid certain foods, no specific diet has been proven to provide full fibromyalgia relief. Of course, it is important to have a healthy, balanced diet. Not only will proper nutrition give you more energy and make you feel better in general, it can also help you avoid other health problems down the road.
Medications for Treating Fibromyalgia
There are a number of medicines that may be recommended for treating fibromyalgia. While only two medications,
pregabalin (
Lyrica®) and
duloxetine (
Cymbalta®), have been approved specifically for treating fibromyalgia, other medicines have been shown, in a number of studies, to provide benefits to people with the condition.
Some of the most commonly used categories of medications for fibromyalgia include:
- Benzodiazepines (for short-term use or for use in people who have not responded to other therapies).
