What Is Fentanyl Used For?

Can Older Adults Use It?

Yes -- older adults can use fentanyl. However, the drug should be used with caution in older adults, as they may be more sensitive to the side effects of the medication, including constipation, abdominal (stomach) pain, and potentially dangerous breathing problems. Older adults may need lower doses, slower dose increases, and close monitoring to help reduce the risk of serious side effects.

Off-Label Uses for Fentanyl

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this medication for something other than its approved uses. This is known as an "off-label use." Some fentanyl products may sometimes be used off-label to treat pain associated with conditions other than cancer.
