Fentanyl Storage and Disposal

Fentanyl can be fatal if it is taken by a child or someone who is not already taking opioid medications. Therefore, it is important to know how to safely store and dispose of fentanyl products. Keep the medication in its sealed package until immediately before use. Depending on the particular product, fentanyl is typically disposed of by flushing it down the toilet.

An Introduction to Fentanyl Disposal and Storage

Fentanyl (Abstral®, Actiq®, Duragesic®, Fentora®, Lazanda®, Onsolis®, Subsys®) is a strong opioid narcotic pain medication. It is a Schedule II controlled substance because it is a highly desired drug of abuse. In addition, fentanyl can be dangerous, and even fatal, if taken by children or people for whom it was not prescribed.

If you use fentanyl, it is very important that you store it and dispose of it in a safe manner to help prevent possible theft or accidental ingestion.

How Should I Store Fentanyl?

Fentanyl products come in individually sealed, child-resistant packages. Store the unopened packages in a secure, safe place, away from children and people for whom the medication was not prescribed. Do not open the individual fentanyl packages until immediately before use.

To be safe, do not store opened fentanyl medications in a pillbox, medi-set, or similar type container, as these containers are usually not child-resistant.
