What Are Fentanyl Buccal Tablets Used For?

How Does This Medication Work?

Fentanyl buccal tablets contain fentanyl, which is a strong opioid narcotic medication. Fentanyl binds to the opioid mu-receptors throughout the body, producing many different effects. Some of these effects, such as pain relief, are desirable; others, such as slowing down the digestive tract, are undesirable and lead to side effects (such as constipation).

The effects of fentanyl include but are not limited to:

  • Pain relief
  • Drowsiness
  • Changes in mood, including feelings of unease (dysphoria) or unusually pleasant feelings (euphoria)
  • Cough suppression
  • Slowed or shallow breathing
  • Slowing of the digestive tract
  • Pupil constriction
  • Itching
  • Physical dependence.

Is It Safe for Children to Use Fentanyl Buccal Tablets?

Fentanyl buccal tablets are only approved for use in adults 18 years of age and older, as the medicine has not been adequately studied in children. In fact, fentanyl buccal tablets could be harmful, and even cause death, if ingested by a child. It is very important to keep this medication in a safe place, out of the reach of children.

Are Fentanyl Buccal Tablets Safe for Older Adults?

This medication should be used with caution in older adults. In clinical trials, people over the age of 65 experienced more side effects, especially vomiting, constipation, and abdominal (stomach) pain. They also needed lower doses, on average, than younger age groups.

Are There Off-Label Uses?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this medication for something other than cancer pain. This is known as an "off-label" use. Fentanyl buccal tablets are sometimes prescribed off-label to treat breakthrough pain associated with other types of chronic pain (other than cancer pain).
