Embeda Dosage

The dose of Embeda you are prescribed will depend on factors such as how you respond to Embeda, other medical conditions you may have, and the type and dose of other painkillers you have taken. Embeda comes in capsule form and is taken by mouth once a day (every 24 hours) or twice a day (every 12 hours). It is not meant to be taken on an "as needed" basis.

Embeda Dosage: An Introduction

The dose of Embeda™ (morphine sulfate/naltrexone hydrochloride) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:

  • The type and severity of your pain
  • How you respond to Embeda
  • The type and dose of other painkillers you have taken
  • Other medications you are taking
  • Other medical conditions you may have.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Embeda contains both morphine and naltrexone (a medication that counteracts morphine, but is only released if the drug is crushed or dissolved). Embeda capsules are available in the following strengths:

  • Embeda 20 mg/0.8 mg
  • Embeda 30 mg/1.2 mg
  • Embeda 50 mg/2 mg
  • Embeda 60 mg/2.4 mg
  • Embeda 80 mg/3.2 mg
  • Embeda 100 mg/4 mg.

The first (and higher) number of the dosage refers to the morphine sulfate content. The second (and lower) number refers to the naltrexone hydrochloride content.

Switching to Embeda

In most cases, the starting dose of Embeda your healthcare provider recommends will depend mostly on the dose and type of painkillers you were previously taking. If you are switching from another oral form of morphine, a straight mg-per-mg conversion is recommended. Simply add up the total mg of morphine you are taking per day; this is the recommended Embeda dosage (in terms of morphine content), taken either as a single dose once daily or split up into two twice-daily doses.

For injected morphine or any non-morphine painkillers, your healthcare provider will need to convert your current dosage into an appropriate Embeda dosage. It is best to underestimate (rather than overestimate) the amount initially, in order to avoid dangerous Embeda side effects.
