Duragesic Drug Interactions

Duragesic Drug Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Duragesic is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Alcohol
Consuming alcohol while using Duragesic could potentially increase your risk for serious side effects, such as extreme drowsiness, confusion, memory loss, or difficulty breathing. Do not drink alcohol while using Duragesic.

Alvimopan
Duragesic may increase the risk for serious alvimopan side effects. You should not take alvimopan if you have used Duragesic in the past seven days.

Amphetamines
Combining amphetamines with Duragesic may increase the pain-relieving effects of Duragesic. Your healthcare provider may monitor your response to Duragesic if you take these medications together. You might need a lower Duragesic dose.

Beta Blockers
Combining Duragesic with a beta blocker may cause your heart rate and blood pressure to decrease to potentially unsafe levels. If you take these medications together, your healthcare provider may need to closely monitor your blood pressure and heart rate.

Calcium Channel Blockers
Combining Duragesic with certain calcium channel blockers may cause your heart rate and blood pressure to decrease to potentially unsafe levels. Your healthcare provider may need to closely monitor your blood pressure and heart rate if you take these medications together.

CYP 3A4 Inducer Medications
The body breaks down Duragesic using enzymes in the liver known as CYP 3A4 enzymes. Some other medications (known as CYP 3A4 inducers) can increase the activity of these enzymes. Combining Duragesic with one of these CYP 3A4 inducers may decrease the level of Duragesic in your body, making it less effective. Your healthcare provider may need to monitor you more closely to make sure your pain is adequately controlled if you combine Duragesic with a CYP 3A4 inducer.
