Diflunisal Dosing

When prescribing diflunisal, dosing guidelines usually call for the lowest effective dose for the shortest period of time. This helps reduce the risk of side effects. When treating mild to moderate pain, the recommended starting dose is 1000 mg, followed by 500 mg every 12 hours. Diflunisal dosing guidelines for osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis recommend 250 mg to 500 mg, taken twice a day.

An Introduction to Diflunisal Dosing

The dose of diflunisal (Dolobid®) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
  • The medical condition you are being treated for
  • Other medical conditions you may have
  • Other medications you may be currently taking.
As always, do not adjust your diflunisal dose unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.

Diflunisal Dosing for Mild to Moderate Pain

The recommended starting dose of diflunisal for most people with mild to moderate pain is 1000 mg, followed by a dose of 500 mg every 12 hours. Some people may need to take diflunisal every 8 hours in order to achieve adequate pain relief.
Depending on your particular situation, your healthcare provider may recommend a smaller dose, such as 500 mg to start, followed by 250 mg every 12 hours.

Diflunisal Dosing for Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis

When treating rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis, diflunisal dosing guidelines call for a starting dose of 250 mg to 500 mg, twice a day. If the pain is still present after several weeks, your healthcare provider may increase your dose. If the pain still does not improve, your healthcare provider may recommend other options for pain relief.
If you are taking diflunisal to help relieve symptoms of arthritis, such as joint inflammation, it may take one to two weeks for the full effects of the drug to be felt. However, diflunisal usually helps relieve pain to some degree in about one hour, and its maximum effects are felt after two to three hours.
